Dried Apple Rings

In the realm of parenting, there is one phenomenon I’ve always found very repulsive: The concept of “healthy candy” or “sundt slik” in Danish. It’s one of those oxymorons that should never have been allowed into existence. While I appreciate parents’ attempt to sneak something nutricious under their son’s or daughter’s radar, it’s just too sacrilegious to glue a word of wonder to one that is essentially a word of horror to a child. And who are you kidding anyway? Have you ever known a child in their right mind entering a room without instantly scanning it for sweets? Whose ears aren’t fine-tuned to the sound of crackling candy paper even if it unfolds on a different floor of the building? I know the kind as that used to be me (and still is to a certain extent). So why parents think they can fool their children through mere semantics is beyond my comprehension. It’s like expecting 007 to be fooled by the hat-and-blue-glasses-disguise.

Semi-Dried Tomatoes

Summer is slowly returning to whatever cave it crawled out of and is leaving human kind (or perhaps just me) mildly depressed. But apart from that, I’ve just had the first day of doing-nothing in about umpteen years, resulting in a creative outburst in the kitchen. Liquorice toffee, pickled cucumbers and slow-roasted tomatoes ahoy!

Danish Delights: Rødgrød med fløde [roygroy ma flyrr]

I must be the last person in Denmark, who hasn’t understood that we live in dangerous times. While I was in Utrecht last week, there had been some cases of killer cucumbers in Germany (infested with e-coli bacteria) which made every single vegetable and piece of fruit coming from either Germany or Spain (that part I didn’t quite catch) seem very ominous. Suddenly all of our good intentions concerning a proper green-filled diet had been turned into a game of Russian roulette.

Parsnip Soufflé – Yay!

Why hello autumn – who the hell invited you here? I for sure am not ready to greet you and your earthy colours welcome just yet. Although that’s not very PC, I know. We’re all supposed to be “can’t-wait-to-go-for-long-walks-wearing-my-perfect-vintage-sweater”. Nope, not quite there yet. I’m still in total denial of the fact that there’ll be no more strawberry-picking for little old me this year. But seeing as it IS an inevitable fact, we’d better get the most out of it, right? That’s why I think it’s time for some parsnip soufflé.

New Year’s Eve 2009

Okay, so I’ve had this amazing New Year’s post planned for quite some time now where I finally give you the recipe for the traditional Danish New Year’s kage “Kransekage” (above left and partly on the right too) that I’ve shown you only in the shape of a picture for the last two years. But then January happened and I’ve done nothing about it so far. That’s why I’m giving you, my supposed readers, the chance to interact and change the course of history.

Danish Delights: Fødselsdagsboller

Happy Birthday Rolls. No, we’re not celebrating the birthday of the roll, but with the roll. Big difference – I’m not crazy you know. Talking to my oven fresh cuties here is not my thang, even though they do have a lot of personality if I may say so. But if I were to talk to them, I’m sure they would say something in the line of
